Bernice Liu as the sexy star and sexy women from China. Bernice Jan Liu (born January 6, 1979) is an actress, singer, and commercial model from Hong Kong. She was a former winner of the 2000 Miss Chinese (Vancouver) Pageant as well as the 2001 Miss Chinese International Pageant, the latter bringing her fame in Hong Kong.
Liu is best known for her role as Princess Shum-Tin in the long-running TVB sitcom, Virtues of Harmony, which was also her first role after joining TVB in 2001. Liu’s singing breakthrough came to an attention in 2005 after she lent her voice for the theme song of the 2005 TVB serial drama, Into Thin Air. The theme song, “Truth,” was Liu’s first theme song and one of the primary promotional songs for the TVB compilation album, Lady In Red, released in 2006.
Liu was born in 1979 in Prince Rupert, British Columbia, Canada. After graduating high school, she moved to Vancouver to attend University of British Columbia. In 2000, she entered the Miss Chinese (Vancouver) Pageant, a beauty contest organized by Fairchild TV, winning the crown. She then represented Vancouver in the Miss Chinese International Pageant that was held in Hong Kong a year later, also winning the same title.
In 2001, after winning the Miss Chinese International Pageant, Liu was offered an artiste contract to Hong Kong’s leading television company, TVB, the same channel that hosted the pagaent. Initially, Liu refused the contract, and instead wanted to further pursue on her university education. Eventually, she signed the contract with the support of her peers, extending her university career to ten years. Liu received her first role that same year, starring opposite Nancy Wu and Frankie Lam as Princess Shum-Tin in the 2001 sitcom, Virtues of Harmony. The sitcom received high ratings with praising reviews, becoming a popular prime-time family watch for the audiences of Hong Kong. Originally an 100-episode sitcom, TVB extended the sitcom to 300 half-hour episodes. Liu’s role as runaway princess was highly recognized, and she became unofficially nicknamed as “Princess” by fans and the media. However, her portrayal earned mixed reviews, and she was criticized for her lack of fluency in Cantonese. The criticism slowly decreased as she appeared in more episodes of the sitcom. Liu credited her father of this achievement, who moved to Hong Kong with her to her with Cantonese dialogues and scripts.
