Eri Machimoto as thesexystar from Korea. Kim Joo-hee is being philosophical. “Since I’ve already made up my mind to go through with it, it would be nice if things turned out well,” she muses. “But do things always turn out the way that we planned? Things happen by chance.”
Miss Korea 2005 and now an SBS presenter, Kim is poised to join the Miss Universe 2006 competition. To take part in the pageant that opens in Los Angeles on July 23, she will leave the country on July 5 and spend 20 days in the daunting company of the most beautiful women in the world.
Kim, who is currently a fixture on SBS’s morning news program “Morningwide Live.” “I feel sorry for my colleagues, but I have no choice but to take three weeks off the show,” she says. “I’m just grateful to colleagues who said, ‘If you go and become the next Miss Universe, don’t think about coming back.’ That lessened the burden for me.”
A graduate of the humanities program at Yonsei University, Kim tried out for presenter jobs with cable and terrestrial broadcasters but failed no fewer than 10 times. Perhaps that experience colors her take on beauty contests, which some feel commodify women. Maybe, says Kim. “But for some people it’s a cherished dream to appear in a beauty pageant. Everybody puts value on different things.”
